Choice is good?
" I haven't tried the new beta version of NetNewsWire 2.0b3 yet, but I've taken a look and one thing is for sure I don't like the icon. Especially the hard black border around the satellite and the globe is rather disturbing to me. I'm more a sucker for the smooth or liquid style. So I fired up Illustrator CS and redrew the globe and satellite in my own style. "Update: Jon hicks indirectly pointed out that my post might be a bit unfair given the question mark in the title, and that I made a comparative graphic. Plus, I really didn't state my opinion of Veerle's efforts. So, I guess I was being a bit passive aggressive ;o)
For the record I like Veerle's execution, and her style is cool. But, I'm not sure it's a great replacement icon since it lacks contrast, and it seems off balance, due to the globe being moved all the way over to the left. Balance and contrast were two considerations I agonized over when creating my icons. Also a big consideration when creating Mac icons is how it looks in the dock by itself and with its neighbors. So, margin should also be a consideration when creating application icons.
