The True Story of Audion
Last week Cabel Sasser (Panic Software co-founder) put together an excellent article on the life of Audion. Audion was the Mac's greatest MP3 application and should have been the basis of iTunes. Apparently it almost was.
I was actually there for the climax of the story.
My friends Nick Chapman, Erin Clerico and I, sat in front of Cabel Sasser, and Steven Frank during the Keynote. Before the show we introduced ourselves and told them how great Audion was. During the show we could hear them making small jokes about the presentations, something about how the music sounded like it was from Survivor and that Steve was about to call the tribal council together, they seemed to be having fun, we all were. Well at least until iTunes was announced. I remember hearing and Oh Shit and a lot of silence after that. The tension was palpable. I tried to look unimpressed with iTunes in solidarity, but I knew Audion's glory days were about to come to an end, and I felt really bad for them.
